Convergence meeting6pm, Friday 7 Sept
St Joseph's Crypt, Newtown.
This meeting will include a briefing on the latest rally details and will make final decisions about the Saturday rally. With the police not just challenging the march route in court but declaring publicly that they will try to stop the protest getting into the "declared area" which covers most of the northern CBD, the convergence will debate whether we should defy this attempt to set up "no protest zones" throughout the city.

Stop the War Coalition forum
After the APEC protests: the anti-war movement and the electionSpeakers from the Greens and the MUAThis election is shaping up to be a landslide against Howard. Iraq may not be the key issue in the campaign—but it is up to anti-war activists to ensure that a defeat for Howard is a real blow for his legacy of support for the war on terror. We also need to prepare to pressure Rudd, who is a staunch supporter of the idea of the war on terror, even if he positions Labor as opposing the Iraq war, to break with support for the wider war.

Socialist Worker public meeting—all welcome
After APEC: Undoing Howard’s damage
Speakers: Barry Hemsworth (sacked CFMEU delegate)
Greens speaker
Tom Barnes (editor, Socialist Worker)With speculation about when John Howard might go to the polls, Australian politics has now swung firmly into election mode. The groundswell of opposition to the Howard government has given hope to the left. But Rudd’s surge towards victory creates its own problems. Labor’s industrial relations policy has sent shudders through the trade union movement. Rudd’s “me-too” policies—his attempt to look as much like Howard as possible—cannot go unchallenged. This meeting will discuss how we can ensure Howard’s defeat at the same time as put pressure on Rudd to deliver an alternative to his policies.
